Medical Devices

Certain medical devices can help a recovering or ailing Dane.  If you have a dog with medical issues, you might check these items out.

EAR PROTECTION
Ear injuries and infections can be very difficult to treat-the more the problem bothers the dog, the more he shakes his head, making it all the worse.  It's important to keep the ears stable to prevent further injury and hematomas.

No Flap Ear Wrap
Highly recommended by Ridgeback breeder/exhibitor Marykay Ligocki, the No Flap Ear Wrap holds the ears securely preventing further damage.

MEDICAL COLLARS & EYE PROTECTION

Donut Collar
When appropriate, the donut-type collar is excellent to prevent scratching at ears or face wounds and is far less stressful than the plastic cone (Elizabethan) collar. The collar has an inner tube that inflates with air and an outer cover.  Loops on the inside allow for a collar to in inserted for a snug fit, and the front has velco straps to keep the front closed.

The quality and sizing of these collars varies greatly from brand to brand. Be sure to measure your dog's neck then refer to the sizing chart provided by the manufacturer.  Outer material choices include a soft felt (not my preference as it's damaged too easily), a rubbery-substance, and cordura nylon (my choice).

Donut collars are an excellent choice to use on freshly cropped puppies, as they are easy to get off and on and comfortable for the puppy. To locate collars, call your local pet store or do a search through Amazon.

I currently have a new XXL ZenPet recovery collar for sale for $25.00.  (Price new at stores over $35.00)

Novaguard Recovery Collar
This company offers a variety of protective collars to protect eyes and prevent scratching.  The products are much less invasive than the traditional Elizabethan collar.

Optivizor
Another brand of protective eye gear.  Sheila Sullivan used this brand when her Dane had an eye injury and found it very helpful.

ORTHOPEDIC DEVICES

These are little rubber booties (think rain boots) that are stretchy and fig snuggly.  I've used them, and they work good if you just need a "quick trip outside" coverage.

PROTECTIVE SUITS

K9 Top Coat

A lycra bodysuit designed to prevent a dog from worry wounds.  Recommended by Marykay Ligocki (Ridgebacks).

Suiticales
This is a protective "suit" the dog wears to prevent them from accessing a surgical site or stitches.  Highly recommended by Dane owner Lynda Moulter.  She used this product after having major problems with her dog after surgery, and felt it was a game changer in the healing process.

RAMPS AND STEPS
While your young dog may be able to easily get up into vehicles, the old one might not be able to.  It's a very good idea to teach youngsters how to navigate a ramp or step BEFORE the time comes when they need it.
